What Exactly Is A Preconception Doula?

Writer's picture: Gwendy GregoryGwendy Gregory

As a birth doula, I have been a part of many pregnancy and labor journeys. From a variety of cultures, families, and pasts. A complex combination of factors take part in the story and outcome of your birth experience.

As a Christian doula, I have the unique perspective of seeing it through Biblical lenses. Time and time again I have observed difficult outcomes that were influenced by past trauma or current fear/anxiety or bondage.

My experience in years of Recovery ministry has equipped me with wisdom in this particular area and I find it intertwining with skills I can use in my doula practice.

So how did the term “preconception doula” emerge? Well, I have felt the nudge from the Lord challenging me to approach this a little earlier. Hear me out: what if I worked with couples on these issues before conception? What if we faced those miscarriages or prior birth traumas now? What if knowing the evidence on epigenetics and the importance of a healthy egg and sperm, we focused on nutrition before the egg and sperm united? What if we sought the guidance of the Holy Spirit to release possible barriers or obstacles that may be a reason for idiopathic infertility?

Preconception doula services are just that: taking a proactive approach to walking in faith and expectant belief of a supernatural pregnancy and birth. If you are intrigued, I’m glad. Pray on it and stay tuned for a live Q&A on my Instagram page as I talk this out more with the many future mamas & mamas that follow my page.

If you know of someone that might benefit from this, please invite them to follow along as I continue to post and elaborate on this new concept. In the end, my goal is as always: to help you achieve the birth of your heart’s desire with the Presence & guidance of our Lord.

“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” Romans‬ ‭12‬:‭2‬ ‭NLT‬‬
